Vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin that is known for the role it plays in blood clotting. It is also essential to the development of healthy bones and the prevention of heart disease. The vitamin is often called a “forgotten vitamin” because its health benefits are frequently overlooked.

Vitamin K3, also known as menadione, is a synthetic form of the K vitamin. It is not a vitamin that should be used as a supplement as it has caused toxicity in infants when they were injected with it.

The variation of vitamin K that is suggested for supplementation is the K2 vitamin, which is natural and non-toxic. Even at 500 times the recommended daily allowance, the vitamin remains non-toxic. The K2 vitamin, which is manufactured in the body, is also found in fermented foods. It is considered a superior form of vitamin K. You can increase your K2 by eating more fermented foods and by taking the vitamin in supplement form.

The vitamin not only prevents hardening of the arteries, it is also used to prevent osteoporosis. Menaquinone can also help keep calcium out of the arterial linings and other body tissues, where it is known to cause damage. The latest research findings show that the K2 vitamin, when used in concert with vitamin D, prevents calcification in the coronary arteries.
